This spanglish zine is a love letter to the Peruvian diaspora, our collective love for pollo a la brasa, and searching for the homeland in between mouthfuls of chicken. What does it mean to grow up in a predominantly white community and see a pollería as an oasis for your culture? For many years, before Marisol was able to travel to Peru, the pollería peruana, Norky’s in one of Tampa’s many strip malls was her embassy. Beyond chicken, Marisol learns that going to eat pollo a la brasa is part of her family’s rituals, grounding them through family losses, the 2008 recession and many Feliz 28’s.
